Wedding Tips For Brides the First Dance part 3, Houston Wedding Photography
Today we will cover whether you should take lessons for your first dance. Since the first dance is one of the more romantic parts of the wedding we really like to see couples do their first dance and be comfortable while dancing. For some couples this is really simple and for others it evokes nightmares. Which leads many couples to decide to take dance lessons.
In theory, I think dance lessons are an awesome way for you to do something together and work towards accomplishing as a couple. There is nothing more graceful and romantic as a couple that comfortable perform a Viennese Waltz. We LOVE LOVE to photograph couples that can “perform” this dance for their guests. It truly becomes a memorable moment for everyone.
The downside to dance lessons is that it takes time and practice to become comfortable with what your being taught. If your able to truly commit to learning a new dance like the Waltz then we say go for it. However, reality tends to set in at times and couples quickly find out that taking lessons is more than just showing up for a class and instantly “getting it”. You can always tell when a couple decided to take lessons and didn’t really put in the time to learn the dance. They almost always will be looking at their feet as they dance trying to watch what they are supposed to be doing. You will even here some couples counting, 1, 2, 3… 1, 2, 3… Frankly, all this does is make the dance look rigid and not even close to romantic. Couples spend this precious time trying to remember what they are supposed to be doing and this special moment gets replaced with something that looks and feels awkward.
With this in mind, if you decide to take dance lessons remember that it will take numerous lessons and LOTS of practice. Be sure to wear clothes and shoes that will be similar to what your going to be wearing at the reception. You do not want to practice in your gym shoes and then try to dance in 5 inch heels. Also for the ladies, keep in mind that your dress is more than likely going to be very heavy and in many cases very restrictive. Try to wear an old formal to practice in so it will seem close to what you will be wearing on your wedding day. It is little things like this that will help make the dance a success.
Finally, if your really considering going this route be sure to talk to your instructor about the demands of the dance. Let them know what your wanting to learn it for and ask them to be up front about how it will look after some lessons and practice. If they cant honestly say, that at the time of your wedding, your ready to make a BIG splash in all the right ways then consider skipping it. I know it will feel like a waste of time but really it isn’t. You will have done something together that could become a lifelong hobby. Ideally you want to make sure the first dance is as romantic as possible and if that means not doing a dance you tried to learn then we think that is a good choice to make. In the end, you want to make sure you are comfortable enough with the dance you choose to be able to really connect with each other during that moment. I promise, once your first dance is over, you will be pulled in every direction possible as the reception fly’s by. Be sure to do everything you can to make this moment memorable!
Check in next week as we head a different direction and look at the wedding timeline.
Cheerfully,
