Wedding Tips for brides the First Dance, Houston Wedding Photographer
In our last post about the Wedding Dance we covered why you should have the dance. If you remember one of the reasons was that the dance kicks off the party and sets the tone for everyone else to begin dancing. Also, for our own selfish reasons, the first dance usually gives us awesome romantic photo opportunities. Today we will go a little deeper into the dance itself and just what kind of dance to do.
For many couples the first dance can be a daunting task. Many are just not comfortable dancing together. We are going to offer a couple of solutions and options for you to consider when planning your first dance. First, for those that just hate dancing and swear they have 3 left feet with the extra one trying to trip them the entire time, we might suggest doing the old “Jr High” shuffle. Just walk out on the dance floor, grab each other around the waist and sway to the music. This is probably the easiest and least stressful dances you will do. To be honest, this is a dance where you will tend to show alot of emotion as you stare into each others eyes just after being pronounced Husband and Wife.
If you want to jazz up the Jr High Shuffle you can add a spin at some point and a dip at the end. Both moves that are pretty easy to do but should be practiced beforehand to make sure you are both on the same page. To add the spin at the beginning take each other by the hand and walk to the center of the dance floor. As you near the point you want to do your dance the guy should raise the hand that he is holding and begin a spin with the bride turning into facing him where he will drop his hands to her waist and they begin the dance. This is an easier move than it sounds like and primarily the bride is doing the spinning. The key is to take it slow and do a nice spin that ends up in his arms. A little bit of practice will make this look perfect.
Another easy way to add some spice to your dance is with a dip. If your doing an engagement session with us then we will more than likely show you how during your session. If not you can take a look a this video for some information on how to do the dip. Learn to Dip your Bride. The couple in this video do a really good job of demonstrating 2 types of dips. One is to use while dancing and another will be used in your couples portraits and during your grand exit if you choose to. Regardless, the best bet is to practice this before the wedding so your both comfortable doing the dips. You might be asking, “when do we do the dip?”. The best time for you to add the dip, when you are not accomplished dancers, is at the very end. It is an easy way to have a romantic finale to your dance and is sure to get some stunning images.
This covers the easiest dance along with some ideas on how to jazz it up. Check back with us as we will continue with some other ideas on what kind of dance to do. Also, we will tackle the question that ALOT of couples ask, “do we need to take lessons?”.
Cheerfully,
Becca & Scott
